Cardiovascular Health

This month we will be discussing cardiovascular health. The cardiovascular system includes the heart, blood vessels, and blood. The main function of the cardiovascular system is to act as a transport system, delivering nutrients and oxygen throughout the body to different organs. Blood pressure and lipid testing are some of the ways to assess cardiovascular health. Blood pressure is the result of the heart pumping blood throughout the body. Therefore, when blood pressure increases, the heart is exerting more force to provide adequate oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. Elevated blood pressure (hypertension) is a major risk factor for a heart attack or stroke. Genetics, dietary, lifestyle, psychological and environmental factors are underlying causes of most cases of high blood pressure. Below are healthy blood pressure ranges.

Blood Pressure Ranges

Testing

The Doctors at Pathways to Natural Health utilize advanced lipid testing to assess cardiovascular health which includes using Cleveland Heartlab’s CardioIQ. This panel is more comprehensive than standard testing and it examines inflammation levels and risk for cardiovascular disease.

Lifestyle Considerations

Ideally, diet and lifestyle should be addressed before starting supplements and/or drug therapy. A well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, nuts, and seeds is recommended. The benefits of regular physical activity on cardiovascular risk factors include reduction in blood pressure and bad (LDL and total) cholesterol and improvements in good (HDL) cholesterol and insulin sensitivity. The general recommendation for physical activity is every adult should participate in 30 minutes or more of moderate-intensity activity on most, and preferably all, days of the week.

Nutrients and Botanicals for Cardiovascular Health:

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

The benefits of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA include lowering triglyceride levels, bad LDL cholesterol, lowering total cholesterol, improvement in the function of the lining of the blood vessels, and improved blood and oxygen supply to the heart.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants are natural substances that can prevent or reduce artery wall damage by blocking the formation of oxidized cholesterol and other free radicals within the blood and thus protect against cardiovascular disease. Our favorite antioxidant supplement is Dr. Mitchell’s Fruit Anthocyanins. This product is a liquid concentrate of red, blue, and purple berries rich in antioxidants. We carry this great-tasting product in our office.

Magnesium

Magnesium is essential for maintaining a healthy heart rhythm because of its action in the transportation of other electrolytes into cells. Magnesium regulates vascular tone and resistance as well as improves lipid metabolism. There are many different forms of Magnesium, talk with your health care provider to see which form is best for you.

Hawthorne

The plant Crataegus spp. which is commonly known as Hawthorne is a cardiovascular tonic. It is used in conditions such as hypertension, cardiac muscle weakness, atherosclerosis, vascular insufficiency, and coronary artery disease. The solid extract form of the berry is recommended for optimal results. The extract we carry is a pleasantly sweet and sour liquid that can be taken alone or added to water for a great-tasting tea.
